Our guide on how you can all enjoy the sun safely while at Club MAC this summer - Club Mac

Mallorca enjoys around 300 days of beautiful sunshine every year. And in July and August, it’s at its hottest. As much as we all love time in the sunshine, it can be dangerous too, particularly for kids.

Our tips to enjoy the sun safely while on holiday at Club MAC

Avoid the hottest part of the day

It’s tempting to spend all day in the sun, but between 11am to 4pm, the sun is just too strong. Even with sunscreen, you’re exposing your skin to harmful rays. If you don’t want to head back to your room, stay in the shade during these peak hours.

We’ve plenty of shady spots around the pools, so head there when you need to get out of the sun. Don’t risk staying out when it’s too hot and try not to fall asleep on your sunbed. Grab a cold drink at one of our bars and enjoy the shade.

Always wear sunscreen (and choose the right one!)

Everyone knows wearing sunscreen helps to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. But there is also a lot of choice when it comes to different creams and sprays. It can be difficult to know which one is right for you.

The danger from the sun comes from UVA and UVB (ultraviolet) light, which cause your skin to tan. This light is also responsible for sunburn, premature ageing and can potentially cause skin cancers. It’s why we recommend you pick a sunscreen that protects you against both UVA and UVB light. Anything SPF rated 30 and above is the best choice.

It’s also important to apply your sunscreen early – at least half an hour before you go out. Keep reapplying at least every couple of hours too, especially if you’re dipping in and out of the pool. And don’t forget those sensitive bits of skin like your feet and the underside of your arms.

Just remember that even the best sunscreen doesn’t protect you completely. Even wearing a high SPF cream doesn’t mean you should spend all day in the sun.

Stay covered up in the sun

Although light colours are often popular in warm weather, darker coloured clothes provide more UV protection. Pack clothes that are loose-fitting and long sleeved to keep the air circulating around your skin. And be careful to choose clothes made from materials that have a close weave, as these help to keep those harmful UV rays at bay.

A wide-brimmed hat is also crucial. The brim casts shade over your neck and face, while the crown protects the sensitive skin on the top of your head.

Look after the little ones

All of these rules are even more important when it comes to the kids. Children should entirely avoid the hottest part of the day. Parents must apply and reapply sunscreen with an SPF value of at least 50. And cover up sensitive skin with the right clothes. It’s super important because studies show that the majority of sun damage happens when we’re children or adolescents.

We know kids can be tricky to coat in sunscreen (especially when they’re jumping around and in and out of the pool), but they’re never too young to learn how to enjoy the sun safely.
